Day 3

On the road

The ride from Lushoto to Arusha is very nice –
although sometimes a little bit disappointing

Lushoto to Moshi

Today we basically spent the day on the road to Arusha, stopping in at Moshi.
We got up really early. It’s wonderful to wake up to the sounds of nature – especially when the next car is some mountain cliffs away.
Get your headphones ready for a short impression of the sounds at the Lodge:

Mount Kilimanjaro

When you arrive in Moshi you are able to easily recognize that this is the base for most expeditions going to the famous Mount Kilimanjaro. In Moshi you will find a ‘Hill Street’, ‘Mountain Street’, ‘Kilimanjaro Street’, ‘Kili-Hotel’ - Restaurant/Bar/Coffee Shop… But hiking the Kilimanjaro takes a few days and we were only passing through. However, we still wanted to catch a glimpse of this famous mountain.

Coffee

First we decided to have a coffee in one of the many coffee shops around as Moshi is one of Tanzania’s coffee centres. All around Moshi you will find coffee plants growing. But our dreams of a fresh coffee, made out of beans that have not travelled thousands of miles before drinking, were shattered. None of these coffee shops were opened on Sundays.

So, off we went back to our car, passing a colourful market. These markets are very lively and the sounds are quite the opposite of the ones heard in the morning.

Eventually, we went to see Mount Kilimanjaro and were disappointed yet again. All we could see were mountains of clouds covering the Kili.

Arusha

We decided to just go to Arusha where we finally reached ‘The Arusha Hotel’. To our pleasure it is a beautifully decorated and comfortable hotel. At least this turns out be a lucky hit. The hotel is located directly within this vibrant city next to the historic placemark “clock tower”. It is the oldest hotel in South Africa - you will find this reflected in the nice traditional african style.
Once more we followed the path of famous people: John Wayne and his film crew planned the shooting for the safari film “Hatari!” (which means “danger”) in The Arusha Hotel. We ended the day with a very tasty dinner and a walk in the beautiful gardens that belong to the hotel.
